Warning Signs to Get Your Brakes Checked

Let’s talk about something very important to your vehicle’s safety: the brakes. These crucial components of your car put you or your passengers at risk if there is any compromise to their performance. Besides the obvious signs like the brake light on your dashboard, let’s look at other key indicators to know that it’s time to get them checked.

  1. Worn Down Brake Pads: Brake pads should be at least one quarter of an inch thick. If they are not, this means it’s time to get your car serviced. The friction that is caused between the brake pads and rotor is what stops the car; if the brake pads are too thin, they may fail to produce the friction needed.
  2. Squealing or Grinding Sound: If you hear high-pitched squeals when braking, or any grinding sounds, this could be the alarming sound of distress. That’s the brake pads signaling they may need to be replaced. The loud sound comes from the metal of the calipers when they grind against the metal of the rotors.
  3. Pulling of the Steering Wheel in One Direction: Ever felt like your car has a mind of its own, pulling to one side when you apply the brakes? When this occurs, it usually means your car’s suspension or components are worn and need some attention.
  4. Vibrating Brake Pedals: Vibration in brake pedals can also be a warning sign it’s time for a service visit. This vibration indicates warped rotors embedded inside the brakes. This vibration might be a signal that the rotors inside your brakes are uneven or warped, causing the pedals to shimmy.

If you notice these signs when applying brakes, don’t ignore them. Call our shop to make an immediate service appointment. Your safety is our top priority.
